UCC addresses International Talloires Network

UCC is a member of the Talloires Network, a leading international network that promotes higher education community engagement. Their current webinar series looks at community engaged universities that are responding quickly and positively to the COVID-19 global pandemic. Episode 3 - Civically Engaged Universities and the Pandemic – Issues of Displacement and Economics on June 8, 2020 (1-2 PM GMT) featured Dr Maire Leane, Senior Lecturer and Vera Stojanovic, student leader, University College Cork (Ireland), who spoke about local responses in support of refugees and asylum seekers as part of UCC's University of Sanctuary initiative. 

On June 8th 2020 Dr Máire Leane, Applied Social Studies University College Cork and Quercus Scholar Vera Stojanovic, addressed the international Talloires Network of leaders from over 300 Community Engaged Universities, on how UCC is responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

The webinar series: 'Adapting to the New Reality: Civically Engaged Universities Offer Strategies and Hope' has been developed by the Open Society University Network and the Talloires Network. Máire and Vera addressed the theme of "Civically Engaged Universities and the Pandemic: Issues of Displacement and Economics." They will collect and share stories of institutions and individuals who are taking action to mitigate the crisis, document practical steps and strategies that may be of use elsewhere, provide uplifting content, and strengthen public support for engaged universities.

In 2019 UCC won the Talloires Network MacJannet Prize for the exemplary community engagement activities of  University of Sanctuary initiative. Maire and Vera spoke about the ongoing work UCC is advancing in support of refugees and asylum seekers during COVID-19.
